Sometimes friends can be your harshest critics. If Roy Nelson and Frank Mir are really buddies, "Big Country" should be cool with Mir's latest assessment of his career. Mir says it's time for Nelson to go down to light heavyweight.

"I know it's not easy to want to cut all that weight but I know he had talked about just changing his body composition, adding weight, getting bigger. Well Roy, you're already 260 pounds. We weighed in the same," Mir told Larry Pepe on ProMMARadio. "That means you've got to drop about 40 pounds of fat and add 40 pounds of muscle. That, to me, is a much harder task than just dropping 40 pounds of fat."

Mir thinks Nelson is carrying wasted weight.

"So for Roy to want to, at 34, he's gonna be 35 this month, try to redo his whole body, I think it would be easier to go to 205. I think his half guard would come back, his takedown defense, his mobility, his footwork," Mir said. "I think he's quick and the power he does have I think he would retain because physically he wouldn't lose any muscle. He's a 205 pound guy with a tire on."

Mir thought Nelson lacked strength, comparing him to the light heavyweights he trains with and said fellow heavyweight Mike Whitehead would beat Big Country.

Mir beat Nelson handily on the scorecards at UFC 130. The 260-pound Nelson looked exhausted by the end of the first round. Earlier this week, Nelson's wife reported that he'd visited a hospital on Monday and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. Nelson complained of being ill weeks before the fight.

LAS VEGAS - Seven fighters from Saturday's UFC 130 card were given medical suspensions following their fights. The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the list of suspensions to MMA Fighting on Tuesday.

The lengthiest potential suspensions went to main event and co-main event winners Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Frank Mir. Each could be out for six months unless given early clearance by doctors.

Jackson will need an x-ray on his left hand, which he said following the fight was fractured going into his bout with Matt Hamill. Failing that clearance, Jackson could be out until the end of November. Mir is in the same situation after his unanimous decision win over Roy Nelson. He'll need a doctor to sign off on his left ribs in order for him to return, or he'll be out until Nov. 25, as well.

Also getting potential six month suspensions were Fight of the Night winners Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago, plus Michael McDonald. Stann has a broken right thumb after his win over Santiago, who has a fractured left orbital.

The full list of medical suspensions is below.

Quinton Jackson: Suspended until June 28 with no contact until June 19. Needs x-ray on left hand. If positive, must be cleared by an orthopedic doctor, or no contest until Nov. 25.

Frank Mir: Suspended until June 28 with no contact until June 19. Must have left ribs cleared by a doctor, or no contest until Nov. 25.

Stefan Struve: Suspended until July 28 with no contact until July 13.

Brian Stann: Suspended until June 28 with no contact until June 19. Must have right thumb x-rayed. If positive, must be cleared by an orthopedic doctor, or no contest until Nov. 25.

Jorge Santiago: Must have left orbital fracture cleared by an ENT or ophthalmologist, or no contest until Nov. 25.

Rafaello Oliveira: Suspended until July 28 with no contact until July 13.

Michael McDonald: Suspended until July 28 with no contact until July 13. Must have left shoulder cleared by orthopedic doctor, or no contest until Nov. 25.

UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo won't be able to fight at UFC 133 in Philadelphia. The reasoning is still murky, but his opponent Chad Mendes isn't going to wait around.

The unbeaten featherweight says he wants to fight in early August, so MMAWeekly reports that Mendes is taking a fight against submission specialist Rani Yahya.

SBNation think it's a bad decision for Mendez to risk the Aldo title fight:

Why is Mendes, a hungry young fighter who's been telling anyone who will listen that his belief that he can beat Aldo is at a "10" on a scale of 1-10, so quick to give up on what should be every fighter's dream? In athletics, winning, especially winning championships, is intended to be the primary motivator. Across sports you hear plenty of platitudes about being the best. Mendes has that opportunity - the chance to write his name in the history books. Instead he's willing to fight anyone else rather than wait a month or two for his shot at glory.

The site takes a stab at the reason Mendes is fighting:

It's a baffling decision - until you look a little closer, delve into the weeds a little. The culprit? The UFC's notoriously stingy fighter pay. [...] It's unconscionable to pay a title contender like Mendes $19,000 to fight. Not only does it necessitate tough decisions like this, it also creates an unbalanced playing field. With that kind of money backing him, Mendes can barely afford a world class training camp and can forget about maintaining a reasonable standard of living. Chad Mendes, the top contender to the featherweight crown, is giving up on a chance to win the championship of the world - likely because of money issues.

Or he could be fighting to stay active and has no fear of Yahya. What do you think? Why isn't Mendes waiting for Aldo?

Part of the issue, could be the confusion on Aldo's injury. He's reportedly struggling with neck issues, but recently tweeted that he's fine.

"Let me be clear I'm not hurt again, I'm not hurt. I picked up a suspension (from) the Canadian commission and therefore should only return to training (after) 30 days this month. So once again, I'm not injured."

Mendes, a former college wrestler, has only 11 professional fights under his belt. The 26-year-old could certainly use the experience, but a loss could prove incredibly costly especially with the growing depth in the 145-pound decision.

LAS VEGAS - Michael McDonald is still in the growing stages of his MMA career. It showed tonight as he struggled to deal with the pace and kicks coming from Chris Cariaso. McDonald, 20, won the fight via split decision, 29-28, 29-28 and 27-30, but Cariaso gave the 3-to-1 favorite a difficult time.

"Chris kicks really hard and his chin is really solid," McDonald said. "Usually when I hit people that hard, they go to sleep. Fortunately, I felt like I executed very well and was able to handle him in all aspects of the fight.  I've got to let this win sink in a bit. I really want to eat some ice cream, get some rest and think about what's next."

McDonald (13-1) looked ultra-confident before the decision was read, but the nerves kicked in when the first judge gave the fight to Cariaso. The 30-27 for Cariaso wasn't outrageous. He pushed the pace throughout and landed more shots. McDonald knew what was coming and may have game-planned a little too much around counterstriking. He landed some solid shots but never really rocked Cariaso (11-3, 1-1 UFC).

In the opening fight, Renan Barao made a successful debut against veteran Cole Escovedo. Barao (26-1) was fighting for the first time in the UFc after a move over the Zuffa's smaller promotion the WEC. Barao was far from dominant, but his takedowns slowed the pace of the fight and nullified any striking advantage Escovedo (17-7) brought to the cage.

UFC president Dana White tweeted the news Wednesday that MMA fans have been waiting to hear:

A fight between the UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre, and the Strikeforce welterweight champion, Nick Diaz, is on for late October. This is the first fight between Strikeforce and UFC fighters since Zuffa, the parent company for the UFC, bought Strikeforce in March. Until now, the UFC had maintained that the two promotions would remain separate.

It is also the bout that makes the most sense for both fighters. Diaz and GSP have both cleaned out their divisions. Neither fighter has lost since 2007. Diaz has been asking for this fight for more than a year, pointing out in an interview with Cagewriter that GSP did not have many challenges left within the UFC:

GSP's fought everybody else. He's already fought Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck. He doesn't want to fight those guys again. He should want to fight me. I think he should stand up and say, whether this fight is going to happen or not, I'm not afraid to fight.

Diaz turned out to be correct, as GSP beat both Koscheck and Diaz's training partner, Jake Shields. Diaz has faced a similar dearth of challenges. He beat Paul Daley with a TKO in the first round in April, and Evangelista Santos with an armbar in January.

Anthony Pettis has had it with the title fight discussion. The high-flying lightweight has been disappointed too many times to count and isn't going to stress over the UFC giving him his shot. When it happens, it happens.

"For me I just gave up on that whole little guaranteed title shot picture," Pettis told "The MMA Insiders" show on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas. "Nothing is guaranteed in this sport. I'm just going to keep fighting my fights and line them up."

Before UFC 125 in January, Pettis, the former WEC lightweight champion, thought he was guaranteed the winner of the Frank Edgar-Gray Maynard fight. When the fight ended in a draw, UFC management initially said Pettis was still going to get Edgar. The next day, after some reflection, Dana White announced that Edgar and Maynard would meet again, and Pettis would have to wait for a true to winner to emerge.

Pettis was teased a bit again in early May. When Frank Edgar dropped out of the third Maynard fight, the UFC offered Pettis the fight and he accepted. That proposed fight lasted less than 24 hours when Maynard pulled out. That's sparked a little war of words between Maynard and Pettis.

Maynard, a veteran of eight UFC fights, said Pettis beat several scrubs and questioned the level of competition in the WEC.

Pettis told "The MMA Insiders" that Maynard is wrong and way off base.

"I think WEC fighters are more versatile fighter than the UFC guys," Pettis said. "The UFC guys are more wrestlers, boxers. The WEC guys are all over the place."

On Saturday in Las Vegas, Pettis fights in the main event of the Season 13 "Ultimate Fighter Finale." Give him credit for taking the fight. The match against Clay Guida is really a no-win situation and he knows it.

"The MMA Insiders" airs each Friday night from 6-7 p.m. PT on ESPNRadio1100/98.9. FM.

Give Brian Stann credit, the guy doesn't need to be fighting in a cage. At age 30, Stann could pretty much choose any profession and be successful. As we witnessed today during the UFC 130 press conference, he'd be a great politician .

"I've been given an amazing opportunity by the UFC. I really make it a point to enjoy every minute I'm in that Octagon because in the blink of an eye that could be taken from any one of us. How many people get the opportunity to be a professional athlete, have an entire arena screaming at you for moment in time? I mean, we're gods in there for 15 minutes," Stann said. "That's gonna pass us by. I savor the opportunity and I'm just very lucky to be fighting a champion like Jorge [Santiago] on Memorial Day."

Before each fight, Stann's military background (Naval Academy grad and a Marine, who served in Iraq and was awarded the Silver Star in 2006) makes for a tremendous story, or does it?

At the presser today, a media member asked if Stann was tired of talking about his heroic history in the military. Most people might have popped off, but not Stann. He took it in stride.

"It's never easy to talk about because it always feels like I'm bragging about my military history and that's not my intention. I'm sure some of the hardcore fans get sick of hearing about it but I'm not the one asking the questions. I think this being Memorial Day that was obvious this was going to happen. I'm sorry if people are getting sick of hearing about it," said Stann.

Sorry? For what? There's no need for Stann to apologize. There's new viewers and fans, at and around each UFC event. Why not keep telling the story? The work he's doing as the executive director of Hire Heroes is pretty incredible.

When it came time to talk about the fight against Santiago, he paid the Brazilian nothing but respect. In doing so, he actually took a mild shot at his original opponent Wanderlei Silva.

"When you get to legend status like Wanderlei Silva, some fights pique your interest and some fights don't," Stann said. "In all honesty, let's face it, I got a tougher opponent, who's better for my career."

Many fans may argue that point. Silva is still a huge name and win by Stann would've moved him towards a fight with a top five opponent at middleweight. Stann pointed out that Santiago is a champion, who's 11-1 over the last four years. Stann has won two straight and 4-of-5. That loss came at 205 against fast-rising prospect Phil Davis.

Ed Herman. It's almost a shame Tim Credeur and Ed Herman have to fight each other at the TUF 13 Finale this Saturday night.

In another line of work - another life altogether, perhaps - they might have been something other than just opponents. One might have been the only person who could understand what the other has been through in the last two years. With all the recent struggles they have in common, they might have even been friends.

In another line of work, maybe. Not this one.

21 months. That's how long it's been since Credeur's last fight. Herman has him beat, but not by much. He blew out his knee at UFC 102 in Portland, Ore. just 18 days before Credeur stepped in against Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma City for what would be his last bout for nearly two years.

Neither of them knew it then, but they were each in for a long wait and an emotional rollercoaster ride before they would get back in the cage again. They certainly had no way of knowing that, at the end of it all, they'd be returning against someone who had walked a similarly hard road.

"When I heard his name I thought, this is a good fight for me. This makes sense," said Herman, whose blown ACL resulted in travails that were at least somewhat typical for a pro athlete, unlike Credeur's.

Herman knew something was wrong when he felt a sharp pain in his knee after a first-round takedown by Aaron Simpson that night in Portland.

"He took my knee out in the first round, but I had never really had a serious knee injury so I didn't know what was wrong with it," Herman said. "I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't ready to bow out."

In the second stanza he tried to throw a head kick - "probably not the smartest thing I could have done," Herman can admit now - and he went down in a heap. Everyone in the Rose Garden knew the fight was over just by looking at the way he rolled on the mat, holding on to his knee like it might fall off if he let go.

Herman had surgery soon after, began physical therapy two days after that, then got right back into training as soon as he was cleared and promptly blew the same knee out again that January.

This is about the time that he started to wonder if he'd ever fight again. And if he didn't, what would he do instead? What if the knee never got back to full strength? How would he make a living? What would his future look like?

Down in Louisiana, Tim Credeur was asking himself some of the same questions, only for him the answers were even less certain. Things were looking good at first. He had a fight scheduled against Tom Lawlor at UFC 113 - his first "UFC with numbers," he recalled - but when he went in for his pre-fight medicals, that's when his plans began to unravel.

"I guess about three weeks before I was supposed to go to Montreal, they found something in my brain scan," Credeur said. "They had no idea what it was or what it could do."

They knew it was small - about the size of a freckle or a mole, according to Credeur - and they knew it was located too near to his brain stem for any kind of surgery to be a realistic option. They also knew that while they tried to find out exactly what it was they were looking at, Credeur was officially out of action.

"I just knew that I wasn't going to be fighting, and that's one of the main ways that I support my family. I was walking to my car thinking, what do I do now? Do I just go have a hamburger or something? Do I go fishing for three months? What?"

Then the phone rang. It was his wife, calling to give him some good news. She was pregnant with their first child. Credeur was going to be a father. That is, if he lived that long. If the mysterious mark on his brain that no one could tell him anything about didn't turn out to be something that would get him first.

"This phone call happened within like ten minutes of me getting out of the doctor's," Credeur said. "I mean, where do I even begin?"

So he decided not to begin at all. He told her how happy he was about the pregnancy. He didn't mention the words 'brain abnormality.' He didn't tell her that he'd be sidelined from fighting for the foreseeable future, or that he had no idea what was about to happen to him - or to their growing family.

Not at first, anyway. It didn't seem like the right time. But eventually it had to come out.

"It was kind of crazy," Credeur said. "We weren't even sure whether I was going to be around for the baby, or if I was, how I was going to support my family. Really, what I did was throw myself into my other business, which is teaching at our academy. It was kind of a blessing in disguise, because now our academy has gotten so big and is doing so well that I really don't need to fight. We've got so many great instructors and the city has really grown with the sport. It's amazing."

Eventually the doctors came back with good news. That spot on Credeur's brain? It was most likely something he'd had all his life. A birthmark, of sorts. Totally harmless.

"[The doctor] said, 'You know, I'm a brain doctor, so cage fighting with four-ounce gloves would not be my recommended life choice, but you're in no greater danger than anyone else.' That was great to hear."

Once he had the greenlight to start sparring and fighting again, Credeur soon set his sights on a June return. It seemed only fitting that he'd get matched up against Herman, who has been out just a tad longer than he has. If it takes a little while to knock off the ring rust, at least he's facing someone with the same problem, so there's no excuse.

But to Herman, it seemed like a sensible match-up for more than just one reason.

"Tim comes to scrap," he said. "That's what I like about it. He comes forward and he likes to get after it. He's not the type who's going to run from me or squeak out a win. He comes to finish, just like I do, so it's going to be a good fight and a good one for the fans, but especially for me."

But while it's nice to have these dueling storylines of long struggles through adversity, they can't both have a happy ending on Saturday night. Someone has to win, which means someone else has to lose in his big comeback fight.

And since both men are coming off losses in their last outing, the future for this weekend's loser might have still more adversity in store, and they know it.

"Honestly, if I don't win this fight, I don't deserve to be there," said Herman. "It's always kind of like that because [the UFC is] always bringing in new guys, and there's always someone else who can take my job."

It's the same for Creduer, who lost a decision but earned a $30,000 Fight of the Night bonus in his last fight. He found himself on the microphone pleading with the UFC not to cut him after that one, because he knows that exciting fights and tales of personal redemption are nice, but they aren't enough in a business where winning means everything.

"I don't care that much about Fight of the Night," said Credeur. "My wife was excited, for sure. But when I got back [to the locker room], I was still crying in the shower, no doubt about it. I'm passionate about this sport and about what I do, and a loss is a loss is a loss. There's no other way to go about it. I take them hard because there's nobody else to place the blame on. That's what I love about this sport. That's what's great about it."

"I owe him another fight," White stated. "Do I think he should have retired? Yeah. He's a man; he's a grown man. If he wants to continue to fight, that's his right."

That's a change in tune from what White said after Filipovic's last fight, when he was knocked out by Brendan Schaub at UFC 128.

"I have all respect for Mirko 'Cro Cop,' but yeah, I'd have to say tonight is probably the last time we'll see 'Cro Cop' fight again."

In addition to the Schaub loss, Cro Cop was also knocked out by a Frank Mir knee late in their unimpressive UFC 119 bout. In his 10-year career, Filipovic has been knocked out four times. Two of those KOs have come in the past year. He also was submitted by a punch in a bout with Junior dos Santos, forcing plenty of damage on his 36-year-old body.

But now he will get another chance for another fight in the UFC.
